Trembling Mountains
Recently, I have been feeling burdened. A heaviness in my heart. I don’t know how you deal with challenging times. For me, when I’m weary, one of my favorite moves is to pull out a worship song from the early days of my faith.
I’m not exactly sure why this practice brings so much comfort. Maybe it’s because it takes me back to when God’s truth was brand new to me — when it felt like every verse, every lyric, was washing over me for the first time. Back then, I was eager to apply Scripture in practical ways at every turn. Listening to those songs reconnects me with that hunger.
The Need for Comfort
During difficult seasons, my heart craves comfort, stability, and hope — not just on the surface, but in my very core. I need the Holy Spirit to fill me, to remind me of who I am in light of who God is and always will be.
One of those songs that still ministers to me today is “Did You Feel the Mountains Tremble” by Delirious.
When Mountains Tremble
When we think of mountains, we think of strength, stability, and permanence. They tower over us as if they’ve been standing since the beginning of time. And yet, Scripture tells us that even mountains tremble in the presence of the Lord.
“Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord.” — Psalm 114:7
This isn’t just poetic imagery. It’s a powerful reminder that no matter how immovable or unshakable something appears, it cannot remain unchanged before God.
• Our Problems: The challenges in our lives may feel like towering mountains — immovable and overwhelming. But before the Lord, they quake.
• Our Pride: Sometimes we see ourselves as strong and secure. God’s presence humbles us, reminding us that only He is eternal.
• Our Hope: If even mountains tremble, we can trust that God’s power is greater than anything standing against us.
Perspective Shifts Everything
The trembling of creation isn’t meant to terrify God’s people. Instead, it highlights His majesty and authority. What shakes the world brings comfort to the believer — because the same God before whom mountains quake is the One who stands with us.
Does this mean my challenges instantly disappear? No. Does my weariness magically vanish? Not always. But it does shift my perspective. It fixes my eyes on the Almighty God — the One who sees me, loves me, and holds the world in His hands.
Suddenly, my weariness is overshadowed by the towering presence of His love.
A Song of Hope
The lyrics of that old song still echo in my heart:
“And we can see that God You’re moving
A mighty river through the nations
And young and old will turn to Jesus…
Open up the doors and let the music play
Let the streets resound with singing…”
Even today, those words stir hope in me. They remind me that God is moving, that His power is greater than my problems, and that His presence can make even the mountains tremble.
What mountains are YOU facing today? Bring them before the Lord, who makes even the strongest tremble in His presence.
