WORD   (25 minutes)

  1. Read 1 Corinthians 14:1. Paul says to “pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts.” It does not say, “Have a correct position on spiritual gifts.” Why is it possible to believe the gifts are biblical, real, and for today while still not actually pursuing them? What is the difference between being open to the gifts in theory and earnestly desiring them in practice?
  2. Read 1 Corinthians 12:1–3. Before Paul lists gifts, he anchors everything in the Lordship of Jesus. “Before the Spirit gives gifts through you, the Spirit gives life to you.” Why does it matter that spiritual gifts begin with surrender to Jesus as Lord? “Immature people can misuse the gifts. But immature people can also bury the gifts.” Which danger are you more prone to: chaos without order, or safety without power? Discuss this balancing statement: “Spirit-filled maturity welcomes what God gives and submits it to what God says”?
  3. Read 1 Corinthians 12:4–7, 11. “God gives the gifts. God empowers the gifts. God owns the results.” How does that protect us from trying to manufacture, fake, hype, control, or take credit for the gifts? What is the difference between seeking the Spirit’s empowerment and just doing ministry with your own strength?
  4. Paul says, “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” There’s not a special class of Jesus-followers who get these gifts. “If you belong to Christ, you aren’t spare parts in His Body.” How does that challenge both insecurity and passivity?
  5. Where have you been waiting for God to use you while refusing to take a step of faith? “Availability that never takes a step is just theory.” What is one area where availability needs to become obedience in your life?
  6. Read 1 Corinthians 14:3, 14:26, and 14:39–40. Paul says everything should be done for building up. Why is the common good so central to spiritual gifts? Who might need encouragement, wisdom, prayer, discernment, or a word from God through you? What might your fear or passivity be costing someone else?
  7. Where are you most likely to play it safe with the Holy Spirit? Are you more likely to hide behind caution, fear of weirdness, fear of rejection, fear of misuse, or fear of losing control? Where has your desire for control trained you to live without depending on the Spirit?
