WORD   (25 minutes)

Big Idea: Mature followers of Jesus don’t come to church primarily to consume; they come to worship Christ and serve His body.

  1. Read I Cor.11:17. Paul gave his startling assessment that the Corinthians’ worship services were “doing more harm than good.” Ouch! What are some signs that we may be approaching worship with a “What can I get out of it?” mentality rather than a “How can I glorify God and bless others?” mindset?
  2. Read I Cor.11:18-22. The congregation at Corinth had become fragmented, and those divisions were showing up even at the Lord’s Table. What kinds of “categories” or divisions do Christians sometimes create today? Are there people or groups of people you naturally find yourself avoiding, judging, or struggling to connect with?
  3. Read I Cor.11:23-26. Jesus said Communion was meant to be observed “in remembrance of Me.” What do you think Jesus wants us to remember about Him when we come to His Table? How can calling to mind Christ’s sacrifice change the way we view our problems? Our preferences? Our priorities? Our dreams? Our relationships with others?
  4. Paul calls us to “examine themselves” before participating in Communion (1 Cor.11:28). What areas in our hearts and lives might need to be examined?

-Have I become more concerned about my preferences than God’s glory?

-Am I holding on to sin that Jesus is calling me to surrender?

-Have I become more critical than grateful?

-Is there someone I need to forgive?

-Am I contributing to the life of the church or simply consuming what it provides?

  1. What are some practical ways we can move from being church consumers to church contributors?
