WORD (25 minutes)
- What command of Jesus are you most tempted to treat like exaggeration, hyperbole, or “too much”?
- Read Matthew 19:16–26. Why do you think Jesus responds the way He does? Why not just congratulate the man for doing so much right? Do you relate to the rich young ruler more than you want to admit? In what way?
- What stood out to you from the idea: “The thing I can’t give up is probably the thing that already has my heart”?
- What do you think about this idea: “Jesus isn’t asking for your respect. He’s calling for your complete, total, unconditional surrender.” How does that hit you? What’s the difference between being close to Jesus and being surrendered to Jesus?
- Read Matthew 7:13–14. The sermon said, “The reality of heaven and hell makes the unreasonable sayings of Jesus very reasonable.” Do you agree? Why or why not? What happens when a person treats this life as ultimate? How does that affect the way they hear Jesus?
- Where are you most tempted to say, in effect, “Jesus can have this part of my life, but not that part”? Is there an area of your life where Jesus has been putting His finger on something you’ve been unwilling to surrender?
WORKS (25 minutes)
- Break down into groups of 2 or 3
- Genuinely PRAY for each other!
